               Family-friendly Employers Award Scheme

Although Hong Kong is an international metropolis, the fact that the wealth gap is widening compromises the feel-good factor for the business community.  On certain occasions, antics and denunciations are waged against the business community to the detriment that the camaraderie between employers and employees is impaired.  This poses an unhealthy trend to Hong Kong. The human-touch management style practiced traditionally by the Chinese community has gradually faded out. During major festivals, Chinese bosses out of their own pockets used to pay their employees for sumptuous meals and cash bonuses. They also subsidized their employees for their children¡¦s education and medical care.  The loss of human touch is due to the prevalent Western management style, which goes against the grain of the goodwill enshrined by both employers and employees. To relive the human touch as a means to improve relations between employers and employees, it is important to support theFamily-friendly Employers Award Scheme, to be hosted first time by Family Council  giving kudos to good employers.  Despite the fact that the down-to-earth approach of Western management culture has its own merits, the harmony between employers and employees is paramount. Employees are assets to the businesses and remuneration packages are only one of a great many factors for employees¡¦ decision to stay in their companies or not. To boost the morale for employees, employers must take into consideration other determinants, such as comfortable workplace milieu and caring arrangement for employees and their families. The latter refers to the perks available to employees in terms of flexible work hours and facilities for quality time to look after their families.  The statutory minimum wage benefits over 300,000 employees by increasing their salaries from 10% to 20% and enhances economic performance on the strength of rising consumption.  As a good employer, he or she should be generous in the payments for rest days and meal breaks, even though they are optional in calculating the statutory minimum wage.  We are confident that employers in Hong Kong are resourceful to brace themselves for any challenges and work together with employees to forge ahead for the prosperous economy of Hong Kong.
